VS Code Gets New JavaScript Debugger

Microsoft has created a built-in JavaScript debugger for Visual Studio Code, the wildly popular, open source-based, cross-platform code editor.

The company's Edge browser development team recently announced that JavaScript developers in VS Code can now uninstall the Debugger for Chrome and/or the Debugger for Edge extensions for a new, simplified debugging experience.

That built-in experience comes via vscode-js-debug, a GitHub project described as a Debugger Adapter Protocol-based JavaScript debugger that works with Node.js, Chrome, Edge, WebView2 and VS Code extensions. It has been the default JavaScript debugger in Visual Studio Code since 1.46 (we're now at v1.58) and is even being rolled out into the Visual Studio IDE.

The new debugger can be used without having to install any extensions in three ways: Pressing F5 (Start Debugging) Activating the debug icon in the menu bar and selecting "Run and debug" Opening the Visual Studio Code command palette and running the "Debug: Open Link command"

Those choosing to debug with Edge will see a new inspect button that can be clicked to install and launch the Microsoft Edge Tools for VS Code extension in order to be able to do things like inspect the DOM, change CSS styling and see network requests of a project running in the browser -- all from within the VS Code instance. That installation only needs to be done once. "As a bonus, you can also use the Debug Console in the editor to interact with the document in the browser, much like you would with the Console in the browser developer tools," Microsoft said. "You have full access to the window object and can use the Console Utilities API."

OneWeb, Hughes sign 6-year pact to provide satellite broadband services in India

Bharti Group-backed company OneWeb and satellite service provider Hughes Network Systems have signed a strategic six-year distribution agreement to provide satellite broadband services across India, a joint statement said on Thursday. The services in India will be provided by Hughes and Bharti Airtel joint venture Hughes Communications India Private Ltd.

The agreement follows a memorandum of understanding signed by the companies in September 2021.

"This announcement marks a turning point for Digital India. Enterprise and government customers, including telecom service providers, banks, factories, schools, defence organisations, domestic airlines, and offshore vessel operators, are eagerly anticipating the arrival of new high performing Satcom services.

"We look forward to bringing them high-speed, low-latency services from HCIPL, using OneWeb capacity," HCIPL president and managing director Partho Banerjee said.

OneWeb's most recent satellite launch on 27 December 2021 brought its total in-orbit satellites to 394, over 60 per cent of the planned 648 LEO satellite fleet.

It plans to commence global service by the end of 2022 as demand continues from telecommunications providers, aviation and maritime markets, ISPs, and governments worldwide for its low-latency, high-speed connectivity services.

"OneWeb is delighted to partner with Hughes to offer high-speed, low-latency satellite broadband solutions. OneWeb's constellation will cover the length and breadth of India, from Ladakh to Kanyakumari and from Gujarat to the Northeast and bring secure solutions to enterprises, governments, telcos, airline companies and maritime customers.

Masai School acquires data analytics firm Prepleaf for $1 million

Edtech and skilling startup Masai School has acquired Delhi-based Prepleaf, an end-to-end placement preparation company that focuses on data analytics, for $1 million, or about Rs 7.5crore.

With this acquisition, the Bengaluru-based startup will now offer courses in data and business analytics in addition to web development and UI/UX design as it aims to become a one-stop destination for outcome-based education in India, Masai School founder and chief executive Prateek Shukla told ET.

Prepleaf, founded in 2017 by IIT Kanpur alumni Ankit Agrawal, Amit Saharan and Aman Singhal, offers 5-month-long courses in data analytics.

This is Masai School’s second acquisition after Bengaluru-based institute Design Shift Academy to offer courses in user experience (UX) design and user interface (UI) design, in addition to its full stack web development course.

It comes after the company announced an undisclosed sum of funding from the likes of Paytm founder Vijay Shekhar Sharma and Cred founder Kunal Shah in October and had raised a Series A round led by Omidyar Network India earlier in the year.

“We have over 700 hiring partners recruiting skilled developers from us,” Shukla said. “This acquisition helps us increase the offering for our hiring partners.”

Prepleaf has around 250 students enrolled in the data analytics test preparation courses.

Like Masai, it offers courses through an income share agreement, where students study at zero-upfront fees and only pay if they earn more than Rs 5 lakh per annum after course completion. Prepleaf’s average placement rate is 90% with an average salary package Rs 7.5 lakh.

“Prepleaf was founded with the single-minded focus of creating a paradigm shift in access to quality tech education and jobs in data and business analytics,” its cofounder Ankit Agrawal said. “We are certainly thrilled to be part of the Masai family and make this ambition a reality by transforming the way skill-based education is delivered today and creating a world-class talent pool from India.”

Founded in 2019, Masai School offers courses online and through its offline campuses in Bengaluru, Patna, Pune and Indore. It works with NBFCs to underwrite the students’ fees.
